In Hong Kong, the empowerment of women and their ability to excel in various roles would be challenging without the support of Filipino and Indonesian domestic helpers. On weekends, the bustling streets of Central and Sheung Wan are often filled with these helpers socializing, a scene warmly regarded by locals who acknowledge their indispensable contributions. Since the 1980s, they have not only been vital for the Philippine economy through remittances but have also become essential in many Hong Kong households, filling roles traditionally held by grandmothers.

A Scene at the Dentist's Office

After months of pandemic restrictions, I finally got an appointment for a dental check-up. Arriving on time to avoid any delay, I settled into the waiting area. There, a father in his fifties came in with his two daughters, one about seven or eight and the other five or six. He was busy filling out forms while trying to manage his younger daughter and reassure the older one.

Shortly after, I noticed a Filipino helper, probably in her forties, sitting nearby, looking after the girls. They were conversing fluently in English, with the helper occasionally speaking and comfortably interacting with the children.

A Misunderstanding

However, the younger girl mistakenly called the helper "mama." This moment made me realize that the nurturing behavior of these helpers, caring for children with such dedication, mirrors that of a mother, providing wholehearted care and attention to their needs.
